Phone, internet and TV services for Telus users in the North Island went down on Wednesday morning, impacting customers’ ability to contact 911.

Telus service went offline in nine communities across northern Vancouver Island – including Campbell River, Port Hardy and Alert Bay – around 4:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Telus says the outage means its customers can’t contact 911 through its services.

However, customers in the area may potentially be able to contact 911 using “wireless fallback coverage” through different carriers in the area, according to Telus.

“If you wish to enable a potential wireless fallback connection beyond 911 access through an alternate carrier in this region, please ensure your mobile device network is set to automatic, and allow time for the wireless fallback connection
