OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WATE) — A new interpretive center overlooking the former site of the K-25 building in Oak Ridge opened on Tuesday.
From the William J. Wilcox Jr. K-25 Interpretive Center, visitors can see the entire footprint of K-25, once the largest building in the world according to the Department of Energy. The National Park Service shared that the building was a mile in length. Tennessee officials attended the opening ceremony on Tuesday, including Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally, Oak Ridge City Mayor Warren Gooch and many others.
K-25 was one of the uranium enrichment facilities that helped build the first atomic bombs during the Manhattan Project. It was demolished in 2013 because of its deteriorated state. The new center is designed to teach people about K-25 and the history
