LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WJHL) — A flurry of activity is taking place in the case of the Commonwealth of Kentucky vs. Shawn "Mickey" Stines, the former Letcher County sheriff accused of killing a district judge in his chambers on Sept. 19, 2024.

Stines is accused of first-degree murder and murder of a public official in the death of District Judge Kevin Mullins. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Several documents were filed in Letcher County Circuit Court on Tuesday, including a response by Stines' defense to the state's motion to change the trial venue. The defense opposed relocating the trial, citing a number of reasons it should take place in Letcher County.

Both sides also filed notices, responses and briefs pertaining to a number of requests in the case.
