The Emporia High girls’ golf team competed in its first event of the year at the Emporia Invite after a tumultuous offseason of change. The team saw freshman Layla Johnson finish in 24 th, shooting 119, and junior Kelsey Shull finish in 25 th, shooting 125 on the day.
Coming into the season, the team saw a multitude of changes with a new head coach and the team losing a top-25 golfer in Kansas, Elise Eckert, who transferred to Seaman High School over the summer. She would win the Emporia Invite this year. With these changes, the team became a lot younger and more inexperienced.
Head Coach Caleb Short knows he has a younger squad that came off an offseason of change, so the plan for the first event of the year was simple.
“The plan this time of year is to have fun and relax, and find
