GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Arc Kent County is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a gala later this month.
"It's so important that we celebrate the community that has worked so diligently and passionately to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities," The Arc Kent County Executive Director Tammy Finn said.
The Arc was founded in 1950 by a group that thought there should be more adult services and special education.
"Seventy-five years ago, there were no services — no special education, nothing," Finn said.
To remedy that, The Arc founded Lincoln School, a special education school now run by the Kent Intermediate School District.
"The parents at that time literally bought the land, moved the rocks — we have historical pictures of them in their dresses lite
