DES MOINES, Iowa -- (Gray Media Iowa State Capitol Bureau) -- State Representative Rick Olson, an 11-term Democrat from Des Moines, has announced that he will not run for another term in the Iowa Legislature in 2026. Following that declaration, former legislator Nate Boulton announced that he would attempt to return to public office and seek his party’s nomination for Olson’s seat.

District 39 covers the east side of Des Moines and Pleasant Hill.

Olson, 74, is a Des Moines native and attorney who was elected to the legislature in 2004. He has experienced years in the majority party but more time in the legislature as a minority member.

Republicans took over the majority of seats in the house in 2011 as Olson began his fourth term.
