The city of Detroit will handle the prosecution of some misdemeanors beginning July 2026, allowing the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office to focus on violent crimes and the city to have more control by offering sentencing deferrals or other programs that could keep crimes off someone's record.
The Detroit City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday to amend the city code to allow the city to prosecute misdemeanor crimes like larceny, malicious destruction of property and retail fraud beginning in 2026.
The vote was 8-1, with City Council President Mary Sheffield voting against the proposal, which was championed by 3rd District council member Scott Benson.
