CASS -- An elderly man was airlifted for medical treatment Wednesday afternoon after a small bear attacked him while he was working outside in northern Franklin County, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission reported.
Such an incident is rare; this is the first bear attack in Arkansas in at least 25 years, according to Keith Stephens, chief of the Communications Division for the commission.
The black bear was killed by game wardens and a Game and Fish large carnivore biologist will conduct a necropsy on the animal's remains, Stephens said.
The incident occurred in the Mulberry Mountain area north of Ozark when the man, who is in his 70s, was on the side of a gravel road working on a tractor, Stephens said.
The victim's son saw a portion of the attack, the commission reported.
