AFL icon Mick Malthouse has described the terrifying moment he fought off three armed burglars who broke into his Melbourne apartment in the dead of night.

The 72-year-old triple premiership coach said he confronted the masked men shortly after 12.30am on Thursday when he heard noises outside his front door.

“There were three blokes on the other side (of our door) with a bit of weaponry,” Malthouse told the Herald Sun.

Armed with a crowbar and screwdriver, the intruders forced their way into the building. But Malthouse grabbed an old steel exercise bar, a piece of training gear from his playing days that he still keeps beside the bed, and went after them.
