ANN ARBOR, Mich. — As Michigan prepares for a key Week 2 showdown at Oklahoma, a weekly competition is brewing for playing time up front.

Three defensive tackles got the start in the Wolverines’ season opener on Saturday but five saw extensive playing time, appearing in 30-plus snaps in the 34-17 win over New Mexico .

And until further notice, that’s not going to change.

“Whoever practices better,” Michigan defensive line coach Lou Esposito said Wednesday. “It’s a different deal than last year. Obviously you had two great players (Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant). Some of the guys that are in the room here were here last year.”

But as Esposito says, “the gap between one and six isn’t as big, so the guys that practice better and do things right — that fit the scheme of what we’re going to
