Few airlines are suffering as greatly as Spirit, which has entered bankruptcy protection—with the myriad of consequences, including on consumer confidence— for the second time in a year . As part of the process, the carrier— which has already slashed summer flights by over a quarter —will exit 11 US cities entirely.

While various new routes have launched recently , others have been cut ( including the odd Fort Lauderdale-Macon ). This will just be the beginning , with many more cuts inevitably coming to its network. To emerge from bankruptcy protection with a better chance of surviving, let alone thriving, it must focus on where it can win.
