A 55-year-old Roseville man was sentenced Wednesday to five to 15 years in prison after pleading no contest to manslaughter for beating a group-home roommate who died from a heart attack after a dispute between the two over fast food.

Mark J. Newsome received the sentence from Macomb County Circuit Judge Richard Caretti for the January 2024 death of Dale Mitchell, 72, during a fistfight in a Waldorf Street group home.

Newsome was originally charged with second-degree murder but his attorney, Mark Haddad, reached a plea deal with Assistant Macomb Prosecutor Danielle Strace.

The altercation occurred Jan. 31, 2024 after Newsome was informed by another roommate Mitchell had stolen his leftover tacos from a shared refrigerator. Newsome said he confronted Mitchell and a fight ensued.
