The prosecution of the second Karen Read trial will cost Massachusetts taxpayers more than $1.4 million, according to newly released records from the Norfolk County District Attorney's Office.
For comparison, during the first Read trial, which ended in a mistrial, prosecutors spent around $45,000 for expert civilian witnesses from four firms: Bode, Hexordia, Venture Too and UC Davis.

The bulk of the expense will go toward paying special prosecutor Hank Brennan, a cost which was previously disclosed to be around $566,000 , and to costs associated with the accident reconstruction work and testimony by experts from the firm Aperture, which billed close to $600,000.
