FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - John D. Miller, convicted of sexually abusing and killing 8-year-old April Tinsley more than 30 years ago, has died.

He was 66.

An Indiana Department of Correction spokesperson confirmed his death. They say he died at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Tinsley disappeared on April 1, 1988, from the 2300 block of Hoagland Avenue. Her body was found three days later by a jogger after the first grader’s body was dumped in a southern DeKalb County ditch.

For years, police were taunted by notes claiming to be from the killer. In 1990, a note left on a barn near where Tinsley’s body was found read, “I kill 8 year old April Marie Tinsley I will kill again.”

Then, in 2004, notes were found at Fort Wayne residences again claiming to be from the killer.
