VELVA, N.D. (KMOT) - A food pantry in the center of the state is harvesting a record amount of produce from its farm.

Volunteers with The Lord’s Cupboard in Minot harvest at least a thousand pounds of produce twice a week in the growing season.

It all started back in 2019 when Duane Brekke donated a portion of his homestead in Velva to grow food for the pantry.

“I said, ‘You can have the gardens. I’m going to build you more.’ So, we built more,” said Brekke.

Since then, 400 people each week, many of whom cannot afford fresh produce, have benefited from the mission.

“It means a lot. My wife and I have been blessed,” said Brekke.

Master gardener Leslie Coughlin found out about the place through a garden tour three years ago.
