RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- As several states and countries consider possible 2026 legislation regarding artificial intelligence (AI), Virginia lawmakers discussed what exactly teaches machine learning models to make predictions and decisions.

During a Joint Commission on Technology and Science (JCOTS) meeting the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 3, Kira Allman, JCOTS Chief Policy Analyst, began her presentation by outlining what exactly training data is -- datasets used to teach AI models to identify partners, make predictions or generate new content.

In her brief, Allman mentioned that as generative AI, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, has grown in popularity, the training models used have also seen a notable increase in attention.
