Displaced residents of the Gentilly apartment complex that caught fire early Wednesday morning have begun returning to the habitable portions of the structure, the city said Thursday.
Officials also said the city is expanding the relief effort to help those displaced by the five-alarm blaze, which injured five people.
The New Orleans Fire Department has completed damage assessments at the Gentilly Ridge Apartments on Chef Menteur Highway and declared all the units in the 6002 building and some of the units in the 6004 building safe for reentry.
The 6000 building, however, "remains uninhabitable at this time," Mayor LaToya Cantrell's office said.
