DUBLIN, Ga. — Dublin City Schools is working to repay nearly $5 million it owes to the state after failing to make required contributions to the state employee health plan, according to district officials.

The financial crisis came to light when the Georgia Department of Education sent a letter to district leaders flagging "financial concerns," including unpaid contributions dating back to March. Superintendent Fred Williams said he first learned of the missing payments through the state notification.

"The state brought it to our attention and that's when we jumped on and responded and so that's how actually I became aware of the situation," Williams said.
