FARGO — The recent Minneapolis shooting is a reminder that active shooter incidents can happen anywhere, from schools and grocery stores to churches and streets.

While calls about “shots fired” are rare in the Fargo-Moorhead area, Sgt. Alex Nelson of the Fargo Police Department says it’s crucial to always be prepared.

“The first things you should do if you think you hear gunshots is get to a safe space and call 911,” Nelson said. “It’s OK to confirm that what you’re hearing are shots fired. But you don’t want to go beyond that and put yourself in danger to try and investigate or anything like that.”

Gunshots can be difficult to distinguish from other sounds, including fireworks or construction. Nelson said context is critical when trying to determine what you hear.
