HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) -- Students at Kecoughtan High School in Hampton had to be evacuated after a firearm and a suspicious package were found on campus Friday morning.

According to a letter sent to Kecoughtan families, during routine safety procedures, a firearm was found in a student's possession while using a metal detector. Following this, security with the school was able to confiscate the weapon and place the student "under the supervision of law enforcement."

Officials with the school said the student will face both disciplinary actions and appropriate charges.

Shortly after the incident, a suspicious package was also found on campus, leading to the building being evacuated and sent to the Hampton Convention Center for reunification.
