The New England Patriots officially will be without their top defensive player in Sunday's season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Cornerback Christian Gonzalez has been ruled out for Week 1 due to a hamstring injury, head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed Friday. Third-year cornerback Alex Austin will start in place of Gonzalez opposite veteran corner Carlton Davis III, per Vrabel.

Gonzalez hasn't practiced since July 28 , when he exited New England's training camp session with a left hamstring strain. The 23-year-old was seen riding a stationary bike during Wednesday's practice and told Patriots Insider Phil Perry he's "working" to return , but it appears his absence will extend into the regular season.
