GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Philadelphia Eagles escaped with a Week 1 win on Thursday, but it was a brutal start of the season for a former Michigan prep football star. Eagles fullback Ben VanSumeren was injured on the opening kickoff of the NFL’s first game.

A video replay of NBC’s broadcast showed VanSumeren pull up and grab at his right knee while falling to the ground. He was eventually carted off the field and quickly ruled out for the rest of the game.

Lipreaders could tell VanSumeren was stunned in the moments after the injury, and understandably so. The Eagle suffered a season-ending knee injury during practice last November. He underwent surgery and was able to recover in time to compete and win a roster spot in training camp.
