DUBUQUE, Iowa — Dubuque City Manager Mike Van Milligen will retire in June 2027 after serving since January 1993, marking the longest tenure in the city's history.

"In my time in Dubuque, I have had the honor to work with and work for people of great character," Van Milligen said. A near-fatal hit-and-run in March 2025 influenced his decision to retire sooner than planned.

Dubuque Mayor Brad Cavanagh thanked Van Milligen, saying, "On behalf of the city council, I want to thank Mike for his many years of service to this community."

Van Milligen highlighted the teamwork in Dubuque, noting the mantra, "Planning, Partnerships, and People."

His retirement allows more time with family and for a potential third career. The announcement gives the city council time to plan for his successor.
