Plans to overhaul the South Bay Galleria are moving forward after city officials approved the next stage of redevelopment for the Redondo Beach shopping center.

The Redondo Beach Planning Commission signed off Aug. 21 on Phase 2 of the project, which will replace part of the property with a mixed-use complex.

The mall, a nearly 30-acre site that opened in 1985, once housed anchor stores such as Nordstrom and Forever 21 but has faced declining foot traffic and store closures over the years.

Real estate firm Kennedy Wilson, which took over the property in foreclosure, is pursuing plans for a three- to eight-story building with 350 apartments and townhomes wrapped around an 845-space parking garage, according to Urbanize Los Angeles.
