ELGIN, S.C. (WIS) - The South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed that one person and two dogs have potentially been exposed to a rabid raccoon.

The raccoon was found near the Tee Pee and Outlaw Trails in Elgin and tested positive on Sept. 4 after being submitted to DPH’s laboratory for testing on Sept. 3.

The raccoon is the fourth animal to test positive for rabies this year in Kershaw County, according to DPH. There have been 64 cases of rabid animals across South Carolina in 2025.

Director of the Rabies Program at DPH, Terri McCollister, said that it’s important to give wild animals their space and to keep pets up to date on their rabies vaccinations.
