COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A chaotic scene outside a Midlands school caused it to go into a secure status on Friday.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said Michael Evans was arrested after a chase that ended with a crash on the 2700 block of Decker Boulevard, just outside Dent Middle School.

RCSD said deputies first tried to stop Evans in the area of Middle Street and Roof Street at around 1 p.m. for defective brake lights. The sheriff’s department said Evans failed to stop, beginning a pursuit that saw him weave through traffic.

Around 10 minutes later, RCSD said deputies “successfully disabled the vehicle” and boxed Evans in on Decker Boulevard in front of Dent Middle School. The school was placed in secure status at around 1:20 p.m., according to a spokesperson from Richland Schoo
