US President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Defense to once again carry the title “Department of War” - a nod to its original name from America’s earliest years.
The executive order, signed in the Oval Office on Saturday morning, does not replace the Pentagon’s official designation but makes “Department of War” a formal secondary title, sidestepping the need for congressional approval.
“We won the first world war, we won the second world war, we won everything before that and in between,” Mr Trump declared.
“And then we decided to go woke and we changed the name to the Department of Defense.”
Almost immediately after the announcement, Pentagon visitors found themselves redirected from defence.gov to war.gov, a signal that the administration had wasted no time in rolling out
