WATSONVILLE — The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission is running out of money to power its flagship bicycle and pedestrian trail project and has asked its staff to explore possible money borrowing options to ensure continued progress.

While preparing for a comprehensive financial update in November focused on the Coastal Rail Trail project, the commission’s staff recognized that the local transportation agency is pulling money from the revenue source that powers the effort faster than it can be replenished. With several miles of the trail already under construction or in various development phases, the commission decided it must look hard for ways to push forward.
