A White House official confirmed to NY1 on Friday preliminary discussions are taking place on ways to take over the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

The 9/11 Memorial and Museum has been open for more than a decade as a place to honor, reflect and never forget the terrorist attacks nearly 24 years ago.

Museum director Beth Hillman did not say in an interview Friday morning whether the Trump administration had been in touch, specifically about the potential push for a takeover.

“At this time of year, we are really focused on our core mission, which is to commemorate what happened on 9/11,” she said.

In a statement released later on Friday, Hillman said, “At a time when the federal government is working to cut costs, assuming the full operating expenses for the site makes no sense.”
