(WKBN) - Young athletes aren't always quick to recognize concussion symptoms. They may even hide or downplay symptoms to keep playing. However, identifying concussions quickly is important for protecting brain health.
Concussions can happen after a hit to the head, a neck injury or whiplash.
Normally, people will experience headaches, dizziness or blurred vision, and sometimes nausea and photosensitivity -- being bothered by light or noises.
Kids may also complain of not feeling right or be more irritable, forgetful or slow to respond to questions.
Dr. Marie Schaefer, a sports medicine specialist with the Cleveland Clinic, says if you sense something isn't quite right, it's important to remove your child from the activity to prevent further injury.
