BEAUMONT, Texas — The Beaumont Police Department marked the 23rd anniversary Saturday of fallen Officer Conrad Gernale, who was killed after a suspect intentionally struck him with an SUV during a family violence incident.

It all happened on September 6, 2002 after Clayton Davis, Jr. returned to the scene where he was the suspect in a family violence assault, Beaumont police say.

Davis struck and killed Officer Gernale as he was walking on the road towards an ambulance that was treating one of the assault victims, according to Beaumont police.

After Davis fatally struck Officer Gernale with the vehicle, he intentionally crashed into the ambulance and injured all three medics inside. Davis was immediately arrested after he got out of the SUV.
