The horrific Lisbon funicular crash that claimed the lives of three Brits was caused by a snapped cable, according to a preliminary report on the shocking incident. ‌

The initial official report from Portuguese authorities concluded that the funicular carriages "suddenly lost the balancing force" of a connecting cable before the crash. At the time of the accident , the Office for the Prevention and Investigation of Aircraft Accidents and Railway Accidents found that the iconic transport had travelled no more than six metres. ‌

The report further states that the imbalance was quickly addressed by the brakeman who immediately activated both the pneumatic and manual brakes. Regrettably, this action had "no effect", the report found, and the carriage accelerated to around 6
