A coronial inquest has revealed the tragic circumstances surrounding the death of an Aboriginal prisoner who took his own life after being transferred from a Canberra jail amid serious mental health issues.

Tian Jarrah Denniss, 33, died on August 5, 2023, while housed in the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre in Silverwater, NSW.

In her opening address, counsel assisting Kristen Edwards SC said the Wiradjuri man's death was a reminder that the "custodial environment remains an unsafe place, a fatal place for so many Aboriginal people".

"His death, like so many others, was preventable," she said on Monday, September 8, as family members watched from a NSW Coroner's Court public gallery and via audio-visual link.
