One of the most prominent academics at the Australian National University has decided to leave.

Frank Bongiorno has written a string of history books that have been acclaimed within academia but also read by a popular audience.

"Dear Colleagues," the professor of history said in an internal email.

"I just wanted to let you know that I have given notice that I will be resigning my professorship at the ANU and will be leaving in early 2026. I will remain in academia and in Canberra. I'll share details as soon as this is possible.

"Needless to say, this was not an easy decision, but it was primarily shaped by my interest in meeting new challenges and pursuing new opportunities.

"I shall always be grateful for having been a member of the School of History and the wider ANU community.
