A woman has been found guilty of stomping on a pitbull named Cardi after a neighbour filmed the act of animal cruelty.

In the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday, Maddison Leagh Ann Rule, aged in her early 30s, was found guilty of one charge of cruelty to an animal.

Prosecutor Brandon Bodel had argued that in January, Rule committed an act of cruelty on the dog by throwing or "stomping" on the animal while on an apartment balcony.

During a hearing, a neighbour gave evidence that he heard three "whelps or barks" before seeing the dog flailing through the air.

The neighbour started filming and told the court he then saw Rule stomping on the pitbull.
