It has been two and a half years since officials broke ground on the anticipated Riverfront Park in downtown Danville. With each delay comes more expense.

Another summer has passed without a new Riverfront Park that was originally supposed to be completed 18 months ago.

Not only does that mean residents and visitors must wait before enjoying a new amenity downtown, it also accumulates added costs for the $14 million project, city officials say.

The delay is costing the city an extra $12,000 to $15,000 per month, said Andrew Hall, project manager for Danville Parks and Recreation.

That’s because the city retains a third-party testing consultant during the park’s construction to regularly check the site for quality control and safety and making sure work on the project is being performed
