Ten years ago Stockport was at a crossroads. Like many high streets and town centres across the country it was seeing businesses closing and investment drying up.

It was, to quote 18-year-old Stopfordian Charlie Small , a bit ‘crap and grim’. But fast forward to 2025 and things are vastly different.

We’ve all heard the ‘New Berlin’ quips by now. But, like all the best p***-takes, it’s funny because it contains a sliver of truth.

Stockport is pretty cool now - and has been for a while. A massive and very much on-going £1bn regeneration project has transformed the town.

The new additions have included a cinema, restaurants, bars, 1,200 homes, a modern bus station, park and public square. Meanwhile the market has been revitalised and the historic Underbanks, once described as
