LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The United States Treasury has announced that the federal government will phase out paper checks starting September 30.

The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is urging individuals who do not have a bank or credit union account, and who currently send or receive federal payments by check to visit MI Open Accounts to find a suitable account.

To help consumers understand the transition, the federal government has released a fact sheet outlining which transactions will be affected and providing additional information.

Through the MI Open Accounts Coalition (MOAC), Michiganders without a current bank or credit union account can access low- or no-cost, federally insured accounts with no unexpected fees.
