A political watchdog is calling on the federal government to end the ban on the sale of new gas and diesel vehicles immediately.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is delaying the requirement that 20 per cent of all new vehicles sold in Canada next year be electric, but he did not repeal the ban, which is due to take full effect in 10 years.

Carney is delaying the mandate in order to do a 60-day review.

However, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation says that doesn’t go anywhere near far enough. It wants the ban to be stricken from the books – period.

Saying Canadians cannot afford the higher tax and power bills to pay for all the subsidies, charging stations, power plants and transmission lines the ban will require, the federation calls the mandate a boondoggle.
