INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts traded out one veteran running back for another on Monday.
Indianapolis signed 32-year-old runner Ameer Abdullah to the practice squad and released Khalil Herbert to make room, officially parting ways with the veteran the Colts signed in free agency to provide insurance behind Jonathan Taylor.
Herbert, 27, initially appeared to be an upgrade over Trey Sermon as Taylor’s backup between the tackles, part of a concerted effort to both give Taylor more rest and to upgrade the team’s options in case of an injury to the star.
