MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A few years ago, a Forbes Advisor analysis found Memphis had the highest average fatality rate from 2017 to 2021 – reporting 25.96 people killed per 100,000 residents.

It’s numbers like those that led MPD to reinstate their Special Traffic Enforcement Unit in 2023. Since then, Deputy Chief of Special Operations Samuel Hines says the progress has been notable, telling Action News 5 that they’ve seen a 36% drop in motorist fatalities since the unit was reinstated.

Now, they’re looking to further the STEU’s progress with the ‘Charlie’ shift, a 2-10 or 3-11 pm shift that MPD hopes will lead to the same success they’re seeing with the dayshift.
