FORT SMITH, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The Arkansas Department of Transportation plans to close a portion of Highway 253 in Fort Smith for overlay work.

According to a press release, Highway 253 between Interstate 540 and Highway 45 in Fort Smith is scheduled to have around-the-clock lane closures alternating northbound and southbound from 8 a.m. Sept. 8 to 5 p.m. Nov. 3.

The release says one lane in each direction will stay open to traffic at all times.

Highway 253 will have alternating lanes closed in both directions for crews to construct a concrete overlay on the existing roadway.

ARDOT says motorists should expect periodic traffic shifts and temporary modifications of existing drives as construction progresses.
