City overestimating usage of event centre, library

The mayor and council believe they are making decisions in the best interest of the taxpayer. This is typical of any municipality and its role.

The revitalization of downtown, led by plans for an event centre, cultural hub and new library, is their primary focus. They are relying on two consultant reports that say Greater Sudbury’s market catchment area is a population draw of 600,000-plus. This is true.

However, a decision based on this market is misguided in regard to the events centre, cultural hub and library. No one from this expanded geographical area will attend the event centre, library or cultural centre. The market capture area is, in reality, Greater Sudbury alone.
