BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - A firefighter was laid to rest on this day in history.

On September 9th, 1998, firefighters from across the country gathered in St. Johnsbury to honor one of their own.

55-year-old Eugene McDonough died while battling a blaze in Lyndonville. Part of the building collapsed on him.

McDonough is one of 27 Vermont firefighters known to have died in the line of duty.

Also on this day in history, a big gathering on the Dartmouth campus in 1995.

The crowd went to witness some mass destruction.

With the help of 550 pounds of explosives, the old Mary Hitchcock hospital was brought tumbling down.

In just seven seconds, one hundred years of medical history collapsed into a heap of dust and rubble.
