Thousands of dead starfish have washed up on a popular Fife beach leaving locals stunned.
Images from the Kirkcaldy promenade have been shared on social media showing thousands of the marine species on the beachfront.
Starfish can only survive for up to a few minutes while out of water, as they cannot breathe air and will suffocate and dry out. However, some species can survive brief periods exposed during low tides.
Photographs from the scene revealed the beach had been filled with the dead animals . Videos sent to the Record also showed the starfish washing up onto the sand.
Residents have been left bewildered by the discovery and have taken to social media to voice their concern . Local Kate Hall wrote: "They cannot survive out water for long.
