Hit hard by slow sales and trade turmoil with the U.S., hundreds of jobs are on the line at Ingersoll’s Cami automotive assembly plant, which is set to reopen in November from a lengthy shutdown.
The Ingersoll manufacturer of electric commercial vans has been shuttered since spring, and union officials say they’ve been told production will not resume until late fall and with only 400 of its previous 1,000-plus workers due to “low volumes” of vehicles being sold.
“Last week when we came to work the company informed us that we will be coming back Nov. 17 on one shift – it will be a slow shift – running slower than what we’re used to,” said Mike Van Boekel, chairperson of Unifor Local 88, which represents the plant’s unionized workers.
