Plymouth Live readers are frustrated that the city centre’s much-loved Civic Square pond has been left dry , fenced off and in disrepair, as the council admits it faces a costly challenge to bring the feature back to life. Once a striking centrepiece outside the Civic Centre, the Grade II-listed pond has now become a symbol of stalled investment and broken promises.

The pond was originally supposed to be repaired as part of a £3m regeneration of Civic Square, funded by more than £2m from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund and a further £1m from the High Street Heritage Action Zone. Early proposals had promised tree planting, restored flagpoles, Hoopla seating repairs – and crucially, the full restoration of the water feature to improve biodiversity and water quality.
