Bamberg County Council members received an update on the development of the county's broadband system during their August meeting.

The $12 million federal grant funding the county received from the United States Department of Agriculture to develop its broadband system to help make high-speed internet affordable for underserved communities has been released.

Engineer Ethan Beeks of Branchville-based W. Metts Engineering Co. Inc. said construction of the system would generally begin in the eastern portion of the crossroads where U.S. Highway 21 and S.C. 61 intersect in Bamberg County, known as Whetstone Crossroads.

He said project construction would then move west along the Highway 61 Corridor.
