Canberrans have been warned to prepare for torrential rain on Wednesday as a cold front moves across south-east Australia.

ACT SES warned Canberrans to expect rain and a potential thunderstorm on Wednesday, September 10, and to prepare for possible fallen trees, leaking roofs or damaged property.

Temperatures will plummet to a minimum of 6 degrees and a maximum of 13, a cold change after several days of warmer weather.

The capital had a 95 per cent chance of up to 40 millimetres of rain on Wednesday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, with the possibility of a thunderstorm.
