If Premier Doug Ford gets rid of automated speed cameras – which he is threatening to do – it will cost the City of Greater hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue.
The city introduced the speed cameras in 2024. A staff report in March said the municipality had earned more than $750,000 in profit during that time.
The same report also said that automated speed cameras work as they get drivers to slow down in the areas they are deployed – an effect that continues even after the cameras are moved.
“During the deployment at each location, operating speeds on each roadway were substantially reduced to or very near the posted speed limit,” staff wrote. “In addition, subsequent follow-up speed studies conducted in the months after the cameras were moved showed a lasting speed reduction
